Young dancer lands dream part

December 9th, 2011 by Tracey

YOUNG Bishop’s Stortford dancer Grace Walker has plenty of reasons to leap for joy after winning her biggest professional part to date.

The 13-year-old, who has been studying her craft since the age of three, will playing the lead role of Mitchie Torres when Disney’s teen hit Camp Rock comes to the Harlow Playhouse.

Grace, who is in Year 8 at the Herts and Essex High School, has now embarked on a gruelling rehearsal schedule on top of her regular weekly commitments to prepare herself for the opening night.

Staged by Bedfordshire company Rare Productions, Camp Rock tells the story of aspiring musician Mitchie, whose struggling family land her a place at a music camp when her mother agrees to provide the catering.

It follows the adventures she has as she makes friends with her fellow residents – who, in the original 2008 Disney Channel movie, were played by teen idols the Jonas Brothers and other young stars.

It will be Grace’s second outing with Rare, following her appearance in their version of Fame at the Playhouse last year, but will be her first in such a high-profile role.

This latest achievement is just one of several for the talented youngster, whose mother owns and runs the town’s Tracey Walker School of Dancing – earlier this year, she was confirmed for a place on a week-long training course at the English National Ballet School.

And in a few months’ time, she and fellow pupils at her mother’s school will be heading to Her Majesty’s Theatre in the West End, where they are showing off routines they first performed at the company’s 25th anniversary celebrations this year.

Tracey said: “Grace does absolutely everything  – ballet, modern, street dance, musical theatre and so on, and it’s a career that she really wants to pursue so she started auditioning for shows last year. She’s over the moon about getting this part, very pleased indeed.

“She trains with me six times a week as part of her normal lessons, and for this show she’ll have to rehearse for four hours a week at the Playhouse. That’s the schedule at the moment, and nearer the time there’ll be extra rehearsals as well.

“Grace realises that it’s a short-lived career and that she has to get her academic qualifications before either going on to ballet or stage school to do A-levels. It’s extremely difficult finding time for everything, but she’s very dedicated and very, very committed to her dancing.”

Camp Rock runs at the Harlow Playhouse from February 2 to 4 next year. See www.playhouseharlow.com or ring (01279) 431945.
